Very beautiful dress from the Romantic period or - as the English would say - from the late Georgian period. The fashion of this period is a transitional fashion. The last remnants of the Empire style were removed and a romantic style took hold. The high waist of the dresses slips lower from year to year until it reaches the “natural level” in 1825. Skirts became wider and puffed sleeves were added. Three-dimensional embellishments and decorations adorned the dresses in the 1820s. They were filled with wool or cotton. The sleeves were also elaborately decorated and could feature imitation slits, puffs and sleeve caps or mancherons. These design elements reflected the romantic historicism that pervaded the decade.
This evening dress has much of what is described here. It is made from cream-colored silk. Semi-circular neckline with a three-dimensional, braided edge. Very elaborately designed sleeves. The lower section of the slightly bell-shaped skirt features two horizontal appliqués, also three-dimensional, each ending in a bow. The red color lends the dress a certain something special. Closure at the back with lacing. The belt, belt buckle and back bow have been replaced. The dress is in good condition for its age. Signs of age and wear, especially a few stains. The decoration is not included.
